I would just like to point out that language inevitably changes, or not a good thing change it to something that is not allowed to do, namely, change the roots of the word maintain, so that the original character of the language, I fear that in the United States has just that ...
American English, British English delibratly was amended to give a better idea of identity in the American language.
All languages change and evolve over time gradully. Today, as we have communication from around the world, again and again, the word "new" still a long way into English from other sources.

It is a common misconception that many of the American way of spelling of certain words is "bad" and our "right" is and this also applies to some debate. There are no right or wrong, since both languages are developed somewhat differently.
